Lenten sermon series:  What Language Shall I Borrow? Questions about Prayer
Rev Steve Jester – “Our Daily Bread” [listen]   Paul writes to the congregation at Philippi to “let your requests be made known to God.” This “asking” prayer, in which we turn to God for all our needs, is made possible by the assurance that, in Jesus Christ, “the Lord is near,” ready to listen and to take on our concerns and burdens. Such prayer is the meat and potatoes of the spiritual life, the basic bread, because when we address our needs to God we are recognizing that we are limited creatures, that we need help from beyond ourselves, and that there is a creativity and imagination much bigger than our own. That recognition is the beginning of our transformation.
Readings:  Psalm 32; Philippians 4:4-7

March 3, 2013; Third Sunday in Lent
Lenten Sermon Series:  What Language Shall I Borrow? Questions about Prayer
Rev Steve Jester – “Just as I Am” [listen]    The “How?” of prayer is not a matter of technique or of special language. Jesus invites us to come openly, honestly, “just as we are” before the One whom he knows as “Abba/Father,” the God who is gracious and loving Parent, before whom we need not pretend or hide.
Readings: Psalm 96; Matthew 6:5-13

February 17, 2013; First Sunday in Lent
Lenten sermon series:  What Language Shall I Borrow? Questions about Prayer
Rev Steve Jester – “Ray Lewis, Beyonce, and the Pope”  [listen]   This sermon series on prayer begins with asking the question, “To whom am I praying?”  This story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness gives us clues as to the God to whom he is praying. This is not a God who plays favorites and overwhelms enemies, a God who gets things done  in a flashy way and on our schedule, but a God of gentleness, grace, and suffering love to whom we entrust our lives and the life of this world.
Readings: Psalm 23; Luke 4:1-13

February 10, 2013; Transfiguration of the Lord
Rev Steve Jester- “Awesome!’  [listen]   The Transfiguration of Jesus is a story that calls us to focus our attention upon Jesus as the center of all things. It challenges our normal desire to understand and describe our faith and to stay busy with helpful service and instead, from time to time,  invites us to stop and look and listen to the mystery of God in Christ. In so doing, we may be transformed.
Readings: Exodus 34:29-35; Luke 9:28-36

February 3, 2013, Fourth Sunday after Epiphany
Rev Steve Jester – “Resistance” [listen]   As God called unlikely and unqualified Jeremiah to speak God’s word of healing truth, so God continues to call unlikely and unqualified people like us to do the same. For good reasons, we resist such a call, but God’s loving insistence is greater than our resistance, and we find ourselves being part of the ministry of Jesus Christ to bring healing and hope to a needy world.
Readings:  Jeremiah 1:4-10; Luke 4:21-30

January 27, 2013: Third Sunday after Epiphany
Rev Steve Jester – ‘Something that Sounds Like Truth’ [listen]   God still speaks to us through the words of Holy Scripture, and that is cause for joy! The Bible is God’s gift of love to us, a word of life that finds its ultimate expression in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
Readings: Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10; Luke 4:14-21

January 20, 2013: Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Rev Susan Moorefield – “Overflowing Abundance” [listen]
Readings: Psalm 36:5-10;  John 2:1-11

January 13, 2013: Baptism of the Lord
Rev Steve Jester – “Words to Live By” [listen]   The words of the Father to Jesus at his baptism, “You are my beloved Son, in you I am well pleased,” are words spoken to us who share in Jesus’ baptism. Amid all the death-dealing messages we receive about our value and purpose, we can claim this life-giving message that we are God’s beloved daughters and sons, God’s “delight,” for no reason other than God’s unconditional love for us.
Readings: Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 29; Acts 8:14-17; Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
