WDSDerby002.jpg Children love to run and play, but childhood is a journey, not a race. Children in our program explore their world, encounter new ideas and make new friends. Our aim is to nurture every child's desire to learn and to stimulate curiosity through play.

The Second Presbyterian Weekday School has been a ministry of Second Presbyterian Church since 1955. It is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, and is committed to meeting the developmental needs of children in their formative years, from two-year olds through kindergarten.

WDSDerby011.jpgCurriculum Children "learn by doing." Our curriculum is based upon play, language simulation and skill building. We provide challenging materials, guidance, freedom of choice, and love. In our nurturing, environment, fun activities are the primary teaching tool!

From our two-year olds to our kindergarten, we focus on four areas of development:

Emotional Development

  • To succeed and have a positive self-image
  • To feel secure and adjust to new experiences
  • To learn by doing and exploring the environment

Intellectual Development

  • To be a listener, observer, thinker, contributor and leader
  • To provide concepts, skills and knowledge, laying the foundation for future learning
  • To express feelings and thoughts through word, song, movement, drawing and other media

Physical Development

  • To develop motor skills
  • To increase eye-hand coordination
  • To comprehend spatial relationships

Social Development

  • To find a comfortable and contributing place in a group
  • To learn to share with others and take turns
  • To manage self, materials and the routine of the day

WDSDerby032.jpg Our classrooms, library, music and movement resources, and our playground are all designed to guide our children toward growth in all of these areas.

Enrichment Activities The resources we offer significantly enhance our students' experiences:

Our Library With more than 4,000 volumes for children (and hundreds more for teachers and parents), our library is one of the best stocked in the city and it continues to grow. Poster-size books, stuffed animals, puppets and other visual aids help make literature come alive for children.

Our Playground Facilities Professionally designed and built, our playground offers plenty of opportunities for the children to run, climb and play daily in the fresh air.

Our Speech Program Early evaluation allows us to identify students who need help and gives us the opportunity to teach individual communication skills.

Our Music Classes In our music classes children discover their singing voices, their listening skills, their responses to rhythm with movement, and the joy of singing with others. These classes instill in the children a lifelong love and appreciation of music.

Our Movement Classes Guided physical movement enhances a child's self-esteem through physical accomplishments. Children develop skills in balance and coordination, and refine their large motor skills – all in a relaxed environment.

Our Computers Located in the preschool fours, kindergarten and extended day classrooms, our computers open a world of learning opportunities in the world of technology.
